Cisco Introduces Android Based Tablets for Enterprises

Cisco, a popular multinational corporation that designs and sells consumer electronics and focuses on networking devices has decided to take a swim into the great ocean of tablet electronic devices. In an official press release today, Cisco Systems announced that they’ll be joining a vast majority of companies worldwide who develop and sell tablets. The new tablet named “Cisco Cius” is slated for an early 2011 release and will feature Google’s Android operating system.
According to Cisco, the new tablet will “delivers virtual desktop integration with anywhere, anytime access to the full range of Cisco collaboration and communication applications, including HD video.” The tablet will feature a full 720p HD camera, and a 5 megapixel back mounted camera. Other features will include Bluetooth, USB, 802.11 a/b/g/n Wi-Fi and 3G cellular service. 4G support will be added in the near future.
Along with all the hardware features offered by Cisco, the tablet users will be able to access Android applications on the market place. Device APIs and SDK will also be released by Cisco so developers can make applications for the device. Cisco has denied any rumors that iPad was the motivating factor for the release of tablet. Tom Puorro, director of product management in Cisco’s IP communications unit, said “the iPad was not the primary driver for the creation of the Cius, though he did note that development was accelerated following the iPad’s introduction. He said, “Cisco began working on the device about 18 months ago.“
